Flannel Friday: Five Little Cookies

This is my flannel board version of the rhyme Five Little Cookies. I got this rhyme from Miss Mollie's What Happens in Storytime... blog. She includes a link to Mel's Desk on her blog post for Melissa's version of the rhyme. My sugar cookies look more like Melissa's cookies, but I actually used this picture of felt cookies from flikr for my cookie decorating inspiration.

Because I do a toddler storytime, I can't manage having 15+ little ones coming up to the board to take the cookies. Everyone would get too bored waiting for their turn and they all would have to have a turn. So, I added animals to my rhyme and made stick puppets from cute clipart I found in Microsoft Clipart and on Google Images. I also decided to have the animals carry a nickel (with Velcro) and then I could stick the cookie to each animal to take away after they leave their coin.

Five Little Cookies
Five little cookies at the bakery shop,
Shining bright with sugar on top.
Along came a DOG with a nickel to pay,
He buys one and takes it away.

Four little cookies... Along comes a DINOSAUR...
Three little cookies... Along comes an ELEPHANT...
Two little cookies... Along comes a TURTLE...
One little cookie... Along comes a MONKEY...

Flannel Friday: Baa Baa Shape Sheep

I got this idea from Making Learning Fun and I had a volunteer make it for me so she could make enough bags of wool to hand out to all the kids who attend toddler storytime. Before we sing the song, I hand out the shape bags to the kids. Then after singing the song for each shape, the kids bring the bag to the board to match the shape on the sheep.

Baa Baa Shape Sheep
Baa, baa circle sheep have you any wool?
Yes sir, yes sir, three bags full.
One for my master, one for the dame, one for the little boy who lives down the lane.
Baa, baa circle sheep have you any wool?
Yes sir, yes sir, three bags full.
(kids with circles on their bags of wool bring them to the board before we sing about the next shape)

Flannel Friday: Gingerbread Man

I used the stick puppet template from MakingLearningFun to do this flannel board. I printed off the outlines and then enlarged them on the photocopier to 125% so they would be the size I wanted. I used felt and then puff paint to add the outlines and detail. I am going to use this flannel board for a cookie storytime with the toddlers later in the year.

To "read" the story to the group, I enlarged the sequencing cards from Daycare Resource Connection, printed them on cardstock and laminated them. I will use both the sequencing cards and the felt figures to tell the story to the group.

I want to make a gingerbread man
to keep me company.

"Run, run, run fast as you can.
You can't catch me!
I'm the gingerbread man!"
"You look very good to eat!"

"Run as fast as you can little pig.
You can't catch me!
I'm the gingerbread man!"

"I'm so hungry after working in the field.
I want to eat that gingerbread man!"

"You may be fast Mr. Horse, but I'm
faster. You can't catch me! I'm the
gingerbread man!"
"I just found out that cows love cookies.
You look like a good one to try."

"Climb on my back and I will carry
you across the river. I hate cookies
and would never even try a crumb."

"Oh, no! I shouldn't have
trusted the sly fox."

Flannel Friday: Penguin Finger Puppets

I am going to do a penguin storytime for the toddlers later in the year. I got this adorable rhyme from Storytime Katie's penguin storytime. I decided I needed two penguin finger puppets to go with it. I did a Google Image search for "felt penguin finger puppets" and found the perfect set with a free pattern online. Yay! To download the free pattern for these little guys, go to Fun Family Crafts and click on the instruction link below the picture. These are quick and easy to make, so I made these puppets at home for my niece's second birthday and bought her Emma Dodd's I am Small to go with the rhyme and puppets.

Two Little Penguins
Two little penguins sitting on ice. (hold up two fingers)
One bows once, the other bows twice. (make fingers bow)
Waddle little penguins. Waddle away. (put fingers behind back)
Come back penguins. Time to play! (bring fingers to front)

Flannel Friday: Little Robin Redbreast

Here is a flannel board I made with fabric crayons and fabric markers. I made it at home for my own little guy and haven't used it at the library yet. I found free coloring sheets online that I used for my outlines. I colored them with the fabric crayons and then transferred them to the felt. Then I embellished the flannel boards with some fabric markers and cut them out.

My favorite version of this nursery rhyme is Little Robin Redbreast: A Mother Goose Rhyme illustrated by Shari Halpern. I have used this book many times in my toddler storytimes.

Book Cover

Little Robin Redbreast
Little Robin Redbreast sat upon a tree,
Up went the Pussy-Cat,
and down went he,
Down came Pussy-Cat,
away Robin ran;
Says little Robin Redbreast:
"Catch me if you can!"

Little Robin Redbreast sat upon a spade,
Pussy-Cat jumped after him,
and then he was afraid.
Little Robin chirped and sang,
and what did Pussy say?
Pussy-Cat said:
"Mew, mew, mew,"
and Robin flew away.

Flannel Friday: Rainbow Kittens

I got this adorable rhyme and idea from one of Miss Courtney Meets Bobo Flannel Friday posts. I couldn't wait to make my own version. I found a kitten outline on Google images that I liked for the kitten template. I used felt for both sides of the kittens and I used puff paint for the faces. I used a portion of a box flap for the box of paint and made my paint circles with puff paint. If you haven't already seen her version of Rainbow Kittens, visit Miss Courtney's blog for great ideas on how to use this flannel board. I am going to just do the rhyme during toddler storytime later in the year. Thanks Miss Courtney!

Rainbow Kittens
Six little kittens found a box of paint.
They jumped right in...
Their mother will faint!
The first little kitten came out red.
"I'll be orange," the second one said.
The third little kitten turned bright yellow.
"I'll be green," said the next little fellow.
The fifth kitten said, "My favorite is blue."
"Purple for me," said the sixth with a mew.
Dancing home the little kittens go
To show their mother a kitten rainbow!

Flannel Friday: Good-Night, Owl by Pat Hutchins

I am going to do an owl storytime for the toddlers in the fall. I am really excited to use this flannel board for Good-Night, Owl by Pat Hutchins, which is a great book for building narrative skills. The kids can repeat the animal sounds and the repeating phrase "owl tried to sleep." One of the other children's librarians used it this week for one of her summer storytimes and she said it went really well.

Book Cover

I found outlines on Google Images and in Microsoft Clipart for all the animals. I used the same bird outline for all the birds, except the woodpecker. I embellished the felt animals with puff paint and made the tree free hand by cutting out the trunk, branches and leaves separately and then I glued it all together.

Owl tried to sleep...
Owl screeched, screech, screech
and woke everyone up!
